about

The Dangling Participles performed for a wedding reception in 2020, so the events of this ballad are based on a true story!

lyrics

As the August sun was setting, we gathered for a wedding
In the garden, now a couple months past
There was love in the air, and flowers in the hair
Of the children running through the grass
The lights are strung, the banners hung,
Dear guests, please take your places.
*Make room, make room, here come the bride and groom
See the joy written on their faces

Generations departed would’ve seen traditions started,
Yet homage to the past was also paid
For there’s something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue,
To honor those now in the grave.
For the borrowed thing, was was a special ring,
With two diamonds set in pair,
Gifted to the lovers, from Groom’s late grandmothers’
Wedding bands! What could compare?

The vows, the kiss, nothing goes amiss,
And two become not one but something more.
After a few friendly roasts, and plenty of champagne toasts.
The wedding party takes to the floor.
So with the rising of the August moon, the band strikes up lively tune,
The couple busts a move, walks on air.
But amid the fun and revelry, is lost some precious jewelry
The borrowed ring of diamonds set in a pair

Dear Saint Anthony, please come around.
Something’s lost and can’t be found.
To the Patron Saint of Lost Things we pray,
Bring back this ring without delay.

The bride in tears, worried how, for years,
This day would ever live in infamy.
But for grace, she did not know how she could face
This, her brand new family.
Flashlight beams travel through the grass across the gravel,
Hoping for a glint in the trampled lawn.
The kids on all fours, scouring the dance floor
To no avail, the ring was gone.

Dear Saint Anthony, please come around.
Something’s lost and can’t be found.
To the Patron Saint of Lost Things we pray,
Bring back this ring without delay.

And then lo and behold, the glint of diamond and gold.
Saint Anthony came around, and now laughter resounds.

With the ring now found, friends and family gather round.
Happy endings do happen now and then.
So make room, make room, gather round the bride and groom,
Watch him place it on her finger again.
